BOSTON, Mass. - The UMass track and field teams wrapped up the 2008 indoor season this past weekend. The men participated in the IC4A Championships, while the women took part in the ECAC Championships. The outdoor season will kick off on Saturday, March 29 when UMass hosts the UMass Five-Way Meet.

At the ECAC Championships, senior Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) placed fifth in the 5,000 meter run with a career-best time of 16:41.71. Freshman Gina Perno (Plainview, N.Y.) placed 20th in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:58.81.

At the IC4A Championships, freshman Tyler Cotto (Holliston, Mass.) placed 19th in the 55 meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 7.74 seconds. Junior Josh Boone (Gardner, Mass.) placed 19th in the 1,000 meter run preliminaries with a time of 2:31.94. In the 3,000 meter run, sophomore Andrew McCann (Fayetteville, N.Y.) placed 40th with a time of 8:46.82. Sophomore Nicolai Naranjo (Essex Fells, N.J.) placed 18th in the 5,000 meter run in 15:08.17, while junior Jesse Regnier (Hampden, Mass.) was right behind in 20th place in 15:20.52.

In the 4x800 meter relay preliminaries, the team of sophomore Ryan DiOrio (Bridgewater, N.J.), freshman Scott VanderMolen (Tully, N.Y.), senior Ryan Durkin (Andover, Mass.), and junior Peter Fortunato (Tewksbury, Mass.) placed 19th in 7:49.46.

The team of senior Matthew Klypka (Oakland, N.J.), sophomore Sam Laorenza (North Andover, Mass.), freshman Brian Tino (Tewksbury, Mass.), and sophomore Jonathan Pierce (Hanover, Mass.) placed 20th in the distance medley preliminaries with a time of 10:19.87.

Both teams will return to action when the outdoor season begins on March 29.
