UMass Track Teams Both Take Third at URI Invitational

KINGSTON, R.I. - The UMass track teams both took third place at the URI Invitational this weekend hosted by the University of Rhode Island. The top male performance of the day came from junior Josh Boone (Gardner, Mass.) who placed second in the 1000 meter run. Boone's time of 2:28.61 qualifies him for both the New England Championships and the IC4A. The top performance of the day for the women came from red-shirted junior Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.) who placed first in the pole vault competition with a height of 12 feet, 1.50 inches. Bakanowski's height replaces the school record she set last year of 12 feet and also qualifies her for the New England Championships and ECAC.
Other notable male performances included freshman Darius Velez who took second place in the 55 meter dash in 6.53 seconds. Sophomore Ian Hackney (Stratford, Conn.) took third place in the 200 meter dash in 22.61 seconds. In the 55 meter hurdles, sophomore Tyler Cotto (Holliston, Mass.) placed third with a time of 7.77 seconds. As a result of their times, Velez, Hackney, and Cotto all qualify for the New England Championship in their respected events.
The men also had two first place finishes including sophomore Ryan Diorio (Bridgewater, N.J.) who took first place in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.53. The relay team of senior Nathan Barksdale (Valparaiso, Indiana), freshman Matt Gulino (Attleboro, Mass.), sophomore Samuel Laorenza (North Andover, Mass.), and sophomore Andrew O'Donnell (Plymouth, Mass.) also took first in the 4x400 meter relay to finish in 3:24.73.
For the women, other notable performances include freshman Gina Perno (Plainview, N.Y.) who took second place in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:58.33 to qualify her for the New England Championships. Senior Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) also qualified for the New England Championships with her second place finish in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:00.95. DeRosa also placed first in the one mile run with a time of 5:09.89. The women also took first place in the 55 meter dash with red-shirted senior Danielle Bolt (Mattapan, Mass.) finishing in 7.20 seconds. The distance medley team of senior Taryn Trapp (Nampa, Idaho), senior Britt Canfield (Southwick, Mass.), Gina Perno, and freshman Liz Fisk (Seekonk, Mass.) also took first place with a time of 12:48.75.
In other men's events, sophomore Brian Miller (Foxboro, Mass.) placed fourth in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.68 seconds. In the 400 meter dash, Samuel Laorenza took third place in 50.71 seconds, while Andrew O'Donnell was right behind in fourth place in 50.75 seconds.
In the one mile run, senior Matthew Klypka (Oakland, N.J.) led the way for the men with a time of 4:20.29 to place fourth, while freshman Scott VanderMolen (Tully, N.Y.) placed sixth in 4:21.80. Sophomore Andrew McCann (Fayetteville, N.Y.) finished eighth in 4:22.90 and sophomore Jonathan Pierce (Hanover, Mass.) was right behind in ninth place with a time of 4:25.12.
In the 500 meter run, freshman Daniel Schwartz (Sudbury, Mass.) took sixth place in 1:07.98 and freshman Brian Tino (Tewksbury, Mass.) finished seventh with a time of 1:09.24. Senior Ryan Durkin (Andover, Mass.) placed third in the 800 meter run to finish in 1:59.80. Sophomore Mark Mariano (Seekonk, Mass.) placed sixth in 2:01.40 and senior James Bentley (Cotuit, Mass.) finished seventh in 2:01.72.
Sophomore Nicolai Naranjo (Essex Fells, N.J.) placed second in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:36.93. Freshman Kris Carle (Jackson, N.J.) took third place in 8:43.15 and junior Jesse Regnier (Hampden, Mass.) placed fourth in 8:48.51.
In field events, Brian Miller placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 6 feet, 4.25 inches. Freshman Sean Busch (Stow, Mass.) took sixth place in the pole vault with a height of 13 feet, .25 inches. In the shot put, freshman Kevin Spieler (Attleboro, Mass.) finished ninth with a distance of 43 feet, 11.25 inches.
In other women's events, sophomore Holly Heinricher (Foxboro, Mass.) placed sixth in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.60 seconds. Heinricher also placed third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.33 seconds. In the 200 meter dash, Kristen Bakanowski placed second in 26.23 seconds, while Danielle Bolt placed fifth in 26.59 seconds.
In the 800 meter run, senior Jennifer Curtain (Medford, N.Y.) placed third with a time of 2:21.70. In the 3000 meter run, freshman Lauren Stocker (Westfield, Mass.) placed third with a time of 10:48.19. Junior Beth Harlow (Melrose, Mass.) finished sixth in 11:00.71, while freshman Anna Eboch (Fairfax, Va.) placed seventh in 11:06.22.
In the 4x400 meter relay, the team of sophomore Brittany Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.), Kristen Bakanowski, sophomore Alexandra Haller (Marblehead, Mass.), and freshman Stephanie Aguguo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) placed third with a time of 4:02.73. The team of Holly Heinricher, freshman Jaclyn Imhoff (Milton, Mass.), sophomore Ros Murphy (Beverly, Mass.), and Danielle Bolt placed fourth in 4:12.73.
In field events, Jaclyn Imhoff placed fifth in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 3 inches. In the pole vault competition, freshman Jenelle Denehy (Whately, Mass.) placed fourth with a height of 10 feet, while sophomore Molly Chapin (Northfield, Mass.) placed fifth with a height of 10 feet. Stephanie Aguguo took third place in the triple jump with a distance of 35 feet, 5.25 inches. Sophomore Lisa Wilson (Holden, Mass.) placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 5.52 inches and ninth in the weight throw with a distance of 44 feet, .50 inch.
Next weekend both the men and women will travel to Boston to take part in the Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University.
