UMass Singles Help Defeat Binghamton, 4-3

ITHACA, N.Y. - For the second year in a row, UMass tennis beat Binghamton 4-3 in Ithaca, N.Y. For the first time this season, the doubles teams didn't take the doubles point in the match, but used their singles power to come back and win. The Nos. 3-6 singles stepped up and beat each of their opponents to win the match.
Binghamton came out to an early lead with the first point of the match. UMass responded with a win by Laura Murillo (Holyoke, Mass.) in the No. 6 singles position as she soundly beat Gayathri Balasundar, 6-1, 6-0. But the No. 1 and No. 2 singles both lost 6-2, 6-2 to their Bearcat foes, UMass found themselves down 3-1.
No. 3 singles player Candynce Boney(Las Vegas, Nev.) beat Yulia Smirnova in two games, 6-0, 7-6(7-0) to help the Minutewomen back into the game and cut the lead to one. Kaitlyn Carpenter (Alburis, Pa.) took her No. 5 singles match in "two." She won the first game 6-1 and was trailing during the second 4-5, but Binghamton's Erica Rosenblum retired to give the Minutewomen the tying point.
The final deciding point came down to the match between Maude Lecluyse (Montreal, Canada) and Danyelle Shapiro. Lecluyse lost the first game of the match 5-7 but came back to tie it up in the second 6-4 and go on to win both the game and the match with a 6-3 score.
The Minutewomen return to action February 16, against Cornell at 12 p.m.
