Tonight is one of the most special nights at UMass as the athletic department inducts five new members to the George Trigger Burke UMass Hall of Fame. Joining the list of all-time UMass greats will be hockey coach Jack Canniff, soccer star Thomas Coburn, the first 1,000-point basketball scorer Jack Foley, multiple sport athlete Edward McGrath and track great Ron Wayne. The quintet will be inducted tonight at the Campus Center. If you would like to join us, tickets are still available by calling 413-545-4290. Also, today's JTAM has articles on UMass basketball and their destination for the 2K Sports Classic and the football team as they ready for Delaware tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

In the Republican Ron Chimelis writes about how Carbondale, Illinois will be the spot where Derek Kellogg coaches his first game as a UMass head coach. Ironically three of the last five basketball coaches have coached their first official game against Division II teams. John Calipari and Bruiser Flint also made their UMass coaching debuts against Division II teams, with wins over Southern Connecticut and Chaminade, respectively.

Thursday looks to be a busy day when it comes to UMass basketball. The final pairings of the 2K Sports Classic featuring UMass will be announced midday. Additionally, the Atlantic 10 will be releasing the conference's national television schedule which includes many UMass games. Finally, cap off your day with a trip to Boston and the UMass Club for a season kick-off event presented by the President's Office. The Daily Collegian has a story on UMass football looking to get off to a fast start against Delaware on Saturday. The Minutemen do not have an offensive score in the first quarter this year. The Collegian also has a piece on UMass finally being at home for the first time in a month.
The News-Journal in Delaware has a story on Blue Hen John Higginson, who played high school ball at Amherst Regional. Higginson is still close with Minutemen Anthony Rouzier and Ben Coblyn, who are also from Amherst.
Jon Quick was the back-up goalie for the Los Angeles Kings in a preseason 3-2 OT loss against the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday. Check out his prospect profile on hockey's future.com.
A pair of former Minutemen hockey stars will begin the season in the AHL with the Milwaukee Admirals as Stephen Werner and Mark Matheson were reassigned from the parent Nashville Predators.

Also, join us for the UMass Sports Luncheon where field hockey's Katelyn Orlando will be honored as the UMass/Dinn Brothers Athlete of the Week. The guest speakers are football coach Don Brown and softball coach Elaine Sortino. Today's "Just Take A Minute" has stories on football, soccer, hockey and other sports.
UMass basketball All-American Gary Forbes was at the Minutemen's preseason workout on Tuesday as he has returned from Italy after his squad, Team Napoli faced legal issues and will not play this season. The team website says the team has been revocated. Forbes is seeking another opportunty playing hoops.
Jeff Thomas from the Republican takes a numbers look at the UMass defense. He has quotes from coach Don Brown and how the Minutemen look to rebound against Delaware on Saturday.

Down at Delaware, the Blue Hens will be playing without one of their top offensive stars Kervin Michaud, who is out with a season-ending injury. The Wilmington News-Journal has a story on the injury as part of a notebook.
Checking in on UMass alums in the CFL, a pair of former Minutemen are in the top 15 of the league in tackles. Anton McKenzie, playing for Saskatchewan Roughriders is fourth in the CFL in tackles with 63 along with two interceptions. Shannon James is 14th in the league in tackles with 52, which leads his Calgary Stampeders. With the Montreal Alouettes, Keron Williams has 28 stops.

Tuesday is here, the last day of September which means the football team will finally have a home game since October is around the corner, this Saturday against Delaware. There are plenty of stories on UMass alums in news. Tailback Matt Lawrence was signed to the Seattle Seahawks pratice squad. Former hockey All-American Thomas Pock was claimed on waivers by the New York Islanders. Also in today's JTAM is a video feature on Liam Coen from NBC10 in Rhode Island as the quarterback went hme during UMass' bye week.
The Republican has a story on the hockey team and how the Minutemen are seeking to rebound from last year's rough finish.
There are various stories on Thomas Pock moving from the New York Rangers organization to the New York Islanders after being claimed on waivers. The Islanders cover it on their website. Chris Botta, the team's former P.R. Director now runs his own blog, IslandersPointBlank.com and has the most comprehensive coverage if you scroll down a little bit.
There is great video feature from NBC10 in Rhode Island with Ocean State native and UMass star quarterback Liam Coen. The clip has some great footage of Coen in high school at La Salle Academy wearing No. 5 in maroon and white.
Taking a look at UMass' football opponent this week, Delaware, the Blue Hens have high praise for the Minutemen's defense despite the slow start. Check out this story from the News-Journal in Wilmington.
The Tacoma News Tribune's daily blog mentions Matt Lawrence signing with the Seattle Seahawks, wearing No. 41. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer also mentions Lawrence.
Here's a great tidbit from the North Dakota State Bison's website: The Bison have a 14-game home win streak, the third longest in the Football Championship Subdivision behind San Diego, 26 and UMass 15. UMass is tied for the fifth-longest home win streak in all of Division I. Here are the top streaks in Division I FBS and FCS (San Diego 26, Oklahoma 20, Wisconsin 16, BYU 15, Boise State 15 & UMass 15). Of course, Boise State is home to former Voice of the Minutemen Bob Behler.

What a busy weekend in UMass Athletics! Five soccer games were played at Rudd Field with four of them extending to overtime, including the Minutewomen's crucial 2-1 league win
over St. Bonaventure. The field hockey team was impressive in a pair of games against ranked foes, beating No. 18 Albany on Saturday, 2-1 before putting together a furious comeback against No. 2 Syracuse despite losing, 5-4
in an extremely exciting tilt. Men's soccer hosted the UMass Classic, falling in overtime on Friday before playing Vermont to a scoreless tie on Sunday. Monday is also Hockey East Media Day in Boston. There are several stories on former UMass hockey players in JTAM.
The Daily Hampshire Gazette had two UMass articles on Saturday. One was on the UMass hockey team's increased television exposure while the other was focused on football's use of the bye week.
Two Boston newspapers, the Globe and
Herald mentioned UMass football's effort vs. Boston College last season when previewing the Eagles' game vs. FCS Rhode Island on Saturday.
John Connolly of the Herald assessed UMass' early-season situation.
In Friday night's daily roundup, the Springfield Republican focused on UMass women's soccer's
thrilling 2-1 double overtime win over St. Bonaventure in the A-10 opener while also mentioning men's soccer's 1-0 overtime defeat to Hartford.
In Saturday's local roundup, the Republican included a story from field hockey's
2-1 win over Albany on Saturday.
The Boston Globe had a
mention of former UMass basketball star Gary Forbes, who now plays for Basket Napoli.
The Globe also talked about former All-American goaltender Jon Quick who is hoping to earn a roster spot with the Los Angeles Kings.

on Sunday's scoreless tie vs. the Minutemen.
The Syracuse athletics website had a game story on the Orange narrow
5-4 escape over the Minutewomen field hockey team.
UMass alum Ron Villone finished his 2008 season with the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. He finished the year with a 1-2 record and a 4.74 ERA. He was also quoted in an article speaking highly of pitching coach Dave Duncan.
Unfortunately, Thomas Pock was reassigned by the New York Rangers to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack.
Greg Mauldin was also reassigned from Ottawa to the AHL's Binghamton Senators.
