Friday brings the start of the hockey season. UMass plays the first regular-season game in the college season taking on Michigan State in Boston as part of the Ice Breaker. FoxSports.com writer Jeff Goodman has a tremendous column on UMass basketball and Derek Kellogg. Saturday brings a huge UMass football game at Northeastern. Watch UMass Football Weekly on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. on CBS3 Springfield, then flip over to Comcast SportsNet for the game on TV.

Dowd focuses on UMass and brings to light what many are saying: UMass has been dropped in the polls unjustly, the Minutemen have lost to the No. 1 team in FCS and the No. 7 team in the FBS. He also takes a look at the big games this weekend in the CAA.
Former UMass star running back Matt Lawrence was waived from the practice squad by the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday.
Ben Larson of the Varsity Voice has a blog on MassLive.com that has several pictures of action from the Celtics game at the Mullins Center on Wednesday night.
The Daily Collegian has a preview of the field hockey team's huge game at Richmond on Friday night. It pits the top two teams in the A-10.
The Collegian also previews the women's soccer weekend as the Minutewomen have a pair of games vs. Xavier and Dayton.

With the NBA in the house on Wednesday, it was a big day for the UMass' Derek Kellogg. The new Minuteman bench boss was all over the media in promoting his alma mater. Kellogg threw up the ceremonial first tip in the Celtics-76ers game before a standing ovation at the Mullins Center. He was also interviewed on Comcast SportsNet during the game and by WEEI Radio in the afternoon. Thursday brings us the Bud Light UMass Radio Show with Don Brown. The player guests will be senior center Sean Calicchio and junior safety Jeromy Miles. You can listen at 7 p.m. on 100.9 FM WRNX. Also, send in your questions for Coach Brown now.
The Springfield Republican's Ron Chimelis has a column on the Celtics first-ever game at the Mullins Center. He writes about the festive nature and Derek Kellogg's involvement in the night.
There ere numerous stories on the Celtics-76ers game at the Mullins Center, all of which mention the game being held at UMass. Here are some to check out: Republican, Boston Herald, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Worcester Telegram & Gazette, and The Associated Press .
ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan was at the Mullins Center to write a piece on the 76ers Elton Brand.
The Globe also has this notebook, which answers the question many asked, why were the Celtics the road team. The game was a Philadelphia home game, the Sixers choosing the Mullins Center because of a tie-in with Comcast president Peter Luukko, a sports management graduate from the University of Massachusetts.
The website Collegefanz.com picks UMass basketball to finish third in the Atlantic 10 in 2008-09. It also has Ricky Harris as the third-best player and Chris Lowe listed as the league's 10th -best player in calling UMass' backcourt the "best in the league."
The Collegian has stories on UMass football. Eli Rosenswaike looks at Coach Brown returning to face the team he once coached. There is a also story on the defense.
Brandon London continues to garner accolades with the Dolphins. Coach Tony Sparano cited him in the Miami Herald. ''I made this statement to the team earlier in the week that I needed to do something from a special-teams standpoint to make sure we had the right bodies at the game,'' Sparano said. ``[ Brandon] London, who played very well on special teams yesterday, played 19 plays and made a couple of tackles. He made a bunch of big blocks on special teams. And as a receiver in practice, [London] has been getting better and better.''

It's Wednesday which means the Celtics' preseason game against the Philadelphia 76ers is here! Limited Tickets are still available, so be sure to order them before it's too late! It's the middle of the week which means another UMass Sport Luncheon. Along with the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week (Josh Jennings), we honor graduated senior Nicole Phelan of field hockey and senior Stephanie Gerardot of women's basketball for being named Scholar Athletes. This week's only weekday game came last night when men's soccer hung tough with defending national champion and No. 1 nationally ranked Wake Forest before falling by a 2-0 final. Be sure to check out this edition of Just Take A Minute which is highlighted by a story about you, the fans, who have come out in full force at McGuirk Alumni Stadium!
In news from field hockey, the Minutewomen remain in 17th in the NFHCA National Rankings that were released on Tuesday.
Jeff Thomas of the Springfield Republican wrote an excellent piece on the record attendance pace through two games at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
The Springfield Republican's Ben Larsen wrote a short article previewing the Celtics' preseason game vs. the 76ers that will take place tonight at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center. It also included photos from the team's practice in Waltham, Mass.
The UMass softball program and star senior Whitney Mollica were mentioned in a Boston Globe article about Don Zimmer.
UMass men's soccer's superb effort against defending national champion and top-ranked Wake Forest was the top story in the Springfield Republican's daily roundup while also in the Winston-Salem Journal.
U.S. College Hockey Online took a look at Hockey East with its yearly predictions. The Mass Attack is predicted seventh by writers Dave Hendrickson and Jim Connelly.
The hockey team is also mentioned on several occasions in the New England Hockey Journal. Its Hockey East Journal by Andrew Merritt goes over news and notes from around the conference.

Tuesday brings to light the biggest game on the men's soccer schedule in 2008 as the Minutemen take on No. 1 and defending national champion Wake Forest at 7 p.m., down in Winston-Salem. The game pits two of the four teams from the 2007 NCAA College Cup. You can watch the game here on UMassAthletics.com or follow on Gametracker. here. JTAM also takes a look at football news as the Minutemen gridders have risen in both polls to No. 11 in the FCS Coaches Poll and to No. 13 in the Sports Network media poll. ESPN.com also has info on the 2K Sports Classic and UMass.
In addition to the TSN media poll, Dave Coulson has his weekly round-up of FCS football. He mentions UMass' 17-7 win over Delaware as the Minutemen picking up a "must-need win."
From ESPN.com over the weekend, analyst Doug Gottlieb wrote about the 2K Sports Classic benefitting Coaches Vs. Cancer. He has this key point: "However! UMass could very well upset SIU. The Salukis replace their starting frontline with the talented Anthony Booker and frosh PG sensation Kevin Dillard (Mr. BB in Illinois '08), while Derek Kellogg takes over a talented Minutemen crew led by Chris Lowe and Ricky Harris. Imagine a semifinal with Duke and UMass. There would be a minimum 50 combined 3s between the teams."
Andy Katz wrote about UMass in his blog on Monday, on the heels of Gottlieb's column. Katz says Gottlieb beat him to the punch, but he quotes UMass coach Derek Kellogg: "We've got a chance," first-year UMass coach Derek Kellogg said of reaching the New York competition. Kellogg adds: "I like our team, but I don't know how good we're going to be and what level we can be at." He concludes saying: "We're always going to play a national schedule. We've got an older, more experienced backcourt that has been battle-tested."
Former UMass star goalie Jon Quick, received the news he was dreading ... he was assigned to the minor leagues as the Los Angeles Kings set their opening day roster on Monday. Quick was beat out by Erik Ersberg to the back-up spot to Jason LaBarbera. Quick was sent to the team's American Hockey League affiliate in Manchester, N.H.

Welcome back ... And boy the UMass defense is back! Saturday was a sensational day for football with over 16,000 fans (along with a TV audience) witnessing the Minutemen's crucial 17-7 win over Delaware. Hockey season is here and the Mass Attack proved that they're raring to go as they topped New Brunswick, 6-0, in an exhibition tilt on Saturday evening. Monday's Just Take A Minute features a number of articles on football's first CAA win of the year as well as news from UMass hockey alumni, and more.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette included a UMass athletics weekend roundup, which had stories on field hockey, women's soccer, and ice hockey.
Former hockey All-American Thomas Pock had an assist in his return to the Bay State, in the Islanders' 3-1 win over the Bruins at the TD BankNorth Garden on Saturday. Pock is wearing No. 17 for the orange and blue.
Another former hockey star, P.J. Fenton, enjoyed an impressive weekend in American Hockey League exhibition action with the Worcester Sharks. On Sunday, he scored a power play goal
in the Sharks' 5-4 win over the Manchester Monarchs. A day earlier, he scored a goal and added an assist in Worcester's 3-2 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack. Fenton was in the area on Friday evening when the Sharks played the Springfield Falcons at the Mass Mutual Center.
Former All-American goaltender Jon Quick continues to battle Erik Ersberg for the Los Angeles Kings' backup job. ESPN.com included a mention of both goaltenders in its Los Angeles Kings season preview.
