NORTH CONWAY, N.H.- Behind strong skiing from Jason Small and Andrew Hawes the UMass men's ski team recorded their best finish of 2008, coming in second at the UConn Carnival. In the Giant Slalom event, senior Jason Small placed sixth with a combined time of 2:15.24. Right behind Small was Andrew Hawes who clocked in with total time of 2:17.18, to earn him a seventh place finish. The top five finishers for UMass included Matthew Small (2:21.35), Adam Pogorzelski (2:22.26), and Alex Zahoruiko (2:22.48) who finish 20th, 28th, and 29th respectively. Paul Lewenberg and James Green skied well for the Minutemen crossing the finish line at 2:27.15 and 2:31.94. Jason Small also recorded the best start time and sixth best finishing times for the day. The Minutemen placed third in the Giant Slalom event after the first day of the carnival.

In the slalom event, all of UMass' top five skiers placed in the top 15. Jason Small took third with a total time of 1:25.97 and Hawes skied to a fifth place finish with a time of 1:26.86. Hohmeister looked to be returning to his original form, as he took eighth with a time of 1:29.40. Zahoruiko and Pogorzelski took 11th and 12th place respectively with a time of 1:30.57 and 1:30.76. With Hohmeister, Zahoruiko, and Pogorzelski recording their best finishes so far in 2008, the Minutemen took second in the Slalom event and hold for third in the conference.

UMass men's ski coach Skip Fox was proud of the team's weekend performance saying, "it [UConn Carnival] was a good team effort and although we didn't win either event individually, the team put in a solid effort." The Minutemen look to build upon their success as they head to the Plymouth State University Carnival held at Waterville Valley, N.H. this weekend.
