ALBANY, N.Y. - Despite Cher King (Christ Church, Barbados) scoring the game's first goal just over four minutes in, UMass Field Hockey (5-6) fell to No. 17 Albany (9-3), 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Turf Field. King's goal, her sixth of the season, came unassisted at 4:02. Albany responded with three first half goals of their own. Becky Letourneau (Greenfield, Mass.) made six saves in goal for the Minutewomen.
Nicole Savage scored two goals to lead the Great Danes. Michelle Simpson added a goal and an assist. Christine Hoffman played the first half in goal for Albany, making two saves en route to the victory. She was relieved by Ashley Ross in the second half.
The UMass offense was clicking early, scoring the game's first goal less than five minutes into the contest. A deflected pass into the circle found King's stick and the sophomore forward made a good move to elude an Albany defender. She turned over to the reverse stick and fired a shot that beat Hoffman, giving the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead 4:58 in.
The Great Danes responded less than two minutes later with a goal by Savage at 6:20. They added two more goals before the half ended, at 19:04 and 24:37.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the second half.
Final shots were 11-8 in favor of Albany. UMass drew more penalty corners than the Great Danes, 6-5.
King led the Minutewomen in shots with four, while Jaime Bourazeris (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) added two.
UMass returns to action on Friday, when they open Atlantic 10 play with a 3 p.m. home contest versus West Chester.
