AMHERST, Mass. - Senior running back Matt Lawrence (Bloomfield, Conn.) has been named UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week after a tremendous performance against Maine. In that game, he picked up 176 yards on 20 carriers with a career-high three touchdowns. UMass defeated the Black Bears, 38-7, propelling them to No. 2 in the national polls. Lawrence will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon at the Campus Center Room 1009 on Wednesday at 12 noon.
Lawrence got the Minutemen on the board with a 62-yard touchdown run on UMass' second offensive play of the game. He also added TD runs of four and one yard. In the process, he became the first UMass player to record three rushing touchdowns since Tony Nelson did last season vs. William & Mary.
The Minutemen now stand at 4-0 overall, 2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association. They prepare for a match up with nationally ranked FBS/1-A Boston College. That game will be on Saturday at 1 p.m. broadcast live on ESPN360.
Lawrence will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday at 12 noon in Campus Center Room 1009. Guest speakers will be Head Football Coach Don Brown and Head Women's Soccer Coach Jim Rudy.
