Sept. 16, 2007
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - A first half goal by Erin Parker (South Deerfield, Mass.) and a second half goal by Katie Kelly (Dedham, Mass.) were all UMass needed as the Minutewomen (4-4) downed Siena (0-5) by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Siena Field. Kara Murphy (Dedham, Mass.) and Mary Shea (Foxboro, Mass.) set up the two UMass goals. Sophomore Sarah Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned the victory in goal and Siena's Renee Clavette took the loss.
The Saints broke the scoreless tie 14:12 into the game. Kristen McGorty scored off a pass from Emily Winslow following a penalty corner to give Siena a 1-0 lead.
The Minutewomen struck back 19:16 into the opening period. Murphy brought the ball into the right side of the circle and slid a pass over to Parker on the left side of the goal. The junior midfielder's shot beat Saints goalkeeper Clavette for her first goal of the season and tied the game at one. It also marked Murphy's first assist of 2007.
Most of the second half was a defensive struggle, as both sides looked to have difficulty capitalizing on opportunities on the bouncy FieldTurf surface.
Kelly broke the tie with 11:45 left when the freshman forward scored the second of her career. Shea brought the ball in the top-right of the circle and the junior midfielder sent a hard pass that found the stick of Kelly on the left doorstep to make it 2-1. It was also Shea's first assist of the 2007 campaign.
UMass controlled play for most of the remainder of the game until the final minute. Siena was awarded a penalty corner with no time left on the clock. Kristina DoRosario (Oakville, Ontario) came up big on defense once again, stealing the ball on the corner to end the game.
The Minutewomen dominated in shots, 22-5. Shots on goal were 12-2 in favor of UMass. UMass took 12 penalty corners to Siena's 11.
Cher King (Christ Church, Barbados) took a game-high seven shots. Parker and Kelly added four shots each.
Williams made one save to run her record to 3-1.
The Minutewomen will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Storrs, Conn. to take on #3 UConn (6-0) in a 1 p.m. contest.
