UMASS POSTGAME NOTES
No. 3 UMass 40, Holy Cross 30
• Courtney Robinson returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown for the first time in UMass history since Oct. 16, 1982 when Richard Jenkins had a 97-yard kickoff return for TD at Maine. The 100-yard return was tied for the third longest in UMass history. The longest return is 102 yards held by Dennis Dent (Morgan State in 1978) and Noel Reebenacker (Springfield in 1951). Robinson tied Ted Piers with a 100-yard return against Bates in 1951.
• Chris Koepplin opened UMass' scoring in 2007 with a 48-yard field goal, tying his career-long of 48-yards set against Stony Brook on Sept. 23, 2006. The all-time record is 52 yards held by Sandro Vitiello (Boston College in 1978) and Denis Gagnon (New Hampshire in 1971).
• Matt Lawrence had his seventh career touchdown in college on a 1-yard run in the first quarter. It was his third score while at UMass, as he had four scores at UConn. Lawrence had a touchdown on a 1-yard rush against Appalachian State in the NCAA Championship game last year.
• Matt Lawrence had a career-high 153 rushing yards. His previous high was 88 against Lehigh on Oct. 4, 2003 while at UConn.
• Matt Lawrence had his first career 100-yard game with 153 yards. Lawrence is the first UMass back other than Steve Baylark since Rich Demers ran for 124 yards on 18 carries against Richmond on Nov, 8, 2003.
• Lawrence had his first career multi-touchdown game with a pair against Holy Cross.
• J.J. Moore had a career-high in receiving yards with 163. He passed his old high of 128 at Colgate on Sept. 10, 2005. Moore's total stands the 7th best receiving day in UMass history.
• Moore is now fifth in catches in a career with 9 today, giving him 114. He moved by Bob Simeone (1981-84), who had 108.
• Quarterback Liam Coen moved to second in career passing yards with 272 in the game. He now has 5463. He passed Dave Palazzi who had 5402. Coen moved to second on his touchdown pass to J.J. Moore in the third quarter.
• Sophomore athlete Joe Sanford had his first career catch for his first career touchdown on a six-yard reception with 10:01 left in the second quarter.
• Chris Koepplin had two field goals to give him 18 in his career tying for fifth in a career with George Papoutsidis (1983-84).
• Koepplin also moved to seventh in career PATs with four in the game to give him 55 in his 16 career games.
• UMass has now won eight of its past nine season openers including the last six in a row. The lost came in 2001 against William & Mary.
• The Minutemen have combined to win their last six openers by a score of 213 to 53.
• UMass 40-point game, gives them 40 or more points in four of their last six openers.
• Holy Cross quarterback Dominic Randolph had 296 passing yards on 62 attempts and 32 completions. His attempts mark set a new record for Holy Cross as well as a record by a UMass opponent as Chris Hixson had 58 attempts for Rhode Island in 1994.
