SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Despite a fine defensive effort, highlighted by Becky Letourneau's (Greenfield, Mass.) four saves, the University of Massachusetts dropped its season-opener 1-0 at Syracuse's Coyne Field on Sunday afternoon. Gloria Nantulya's goal with 14:29 left was the difference. The Minutewomen drop to 0-1 on the season, while Syracuse improves to 2-0.
It was the first game for UMass under head coach Justine Sowry. Syracuse is also playing under a new coach, former-Richmond coach Ange Bradley.
Letourneau and the UMass defense stopped the Orange on its first four penalty corner tries of the game, but Syracuse finally broke through at the 55:31 mark when Brittany Angellella's shot was tipped in by Nantulya for her second goal of the season.
Senior midfielder Erin Parker (S. Deerfield, Mass.) and freshman forward Katie Kelly (Dedham, Mass.) registered a shot on goal apiece for the Minutewomen. Orange goalie Heather Hess was up to the task, stopping both shots.
UMass had four shots total, all in the second half. Syracuse logged nine shots for the game.
The Minutewomen return to Amherst for the home-opener on Wednesday against Sacred Heart. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Garber Field. Live video of the game will be available on UMass All-Access. Fans can also follow the action on Gametracker at UMassAthletics.com.
