The varsity eight help lead the Minutewomen to victory

UMass Rowing Defeats Iona, Colgate

Orchard Beach, N.Y. - The UMass women's rowing team recorded their second win of the 2007 season this Sunday at Orchard Beach Lagoon. They defeated Iona and Colgate in the neutral site match-up. The Minutewomen have won two out of the last three.

The varsity eight won their event defeating their lone competitor Colgate by a quick six seconds. UMass finished in less than seven minutes with a time of 6:57.7, Colgate finished with 7:03.8. Umass' varsity eight included Ellen Maskrey, Gabrielle Papineau, Sarah Marsan, Hannah Brewster, Airlina Burrill, Amanda Mawn, Elizabeth Hayashida, Tara Guinan, and coxswain Dana Pulda.

The second varsity eight won their event as well coming in with a time of 7:16.9, overpowering Colgate by nearly 17 seconds. They also beat the UMass novice eight team consisting of Sarah Albert, Meghan Caffrey, Chelsea Finnegan, Jennifer Rivero, Samantha Smith, Kathryn Kern, Stacey Susienka, Allison Donzanti, and coxswain Melissa D'Amico who finished with a time of 7:51.2. The second varsity eight team included Andrea Morand, Haley Fitzgerald, Karen Plevock, Erin Kelly, Rachael Nealer, Anna Welch, Kristen Boyce, Julie Markus, and coxswain Jeanine LeDoux.

The third varsity eight didn't have as much luck as their teammates losing to Iona by a mere ten seconds coming in with a time of 7:31.2. The third varsity eight team is made up of Anna Malinkevich, Karalyn Walk, Courtney Mulvihill, Stephanie Rist, Meaghan Dempster, Sarah Potts, Abby Lively, Maria Arcari, and coxswain Molly Morgan.

The Minutewomen varsity four finished in last place (8:53.7) in their event losing to Colgate, two Iona teams and the UMass lightweight team. Colgate finished in first place, Iona took both second and fourth and the lightweight team came in third (8:22.6). The varsity four team included Mulvihill, Walk, Rist, Emily Reynolds, and coxswain LeDoux. And the lightweight team consisted of Malinkevich, Potts, Lively, Arcari and coxswain Morgan.

Finally, in the novice four race, UMass' three novice teams took first, second and fourth place(s) with the lone non-Minutewoman team of Iona coming in third.

The next event for the Minutewomen will be in two weeks at the Boston University Invitational Regatta, a weekend long event on April 14th and 15th in Boston, Mass.
