CINCINNATI, Ohio - The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team got back to the win column on Sunday, with a 3-1 victory over Xavier. The Minutewomen (7-2-1, 2-2 Atlantic 10) fell behind early, but Kaelyn Caldwell's first-career goal tied the score. In the second half, Britt Canfield scored twice to ice the win. UMass is back in action on Thursday when they host the Rhode Island Rams at 4 p.m.

"It was a great win for us because we were a little bit down after losing the Duquesne game and losing to Dayton," Head Coach Jim Rudy said. "This was an important win, even more so because we got Melissa Toulouse back, and we came from behind against a team that didn't give you a lot of space.

"We're definitely better when we have our central defender on the field. Melissa was so composed, skillful and mature. That was a big difference."

UMass gave up an early goal for the second consecutive game. Melissa Zimmerman scored her fourth goal of the season off a header at the 8:06 mark, assisted by Brittany Green and Kaitlyn McGoldrick.

Caldwell came up big just before the half. The senior defenseman scored her first-career goal at 42:49 to tie the score at one. She took a beautiful shot from outside the box; it went over Xavier goalkeeper Kelly Farrell and into the back of the net.

Most of the second half was played to a standstill until Canfield took over. She gave UMass the 2-1 lead when she headed the ball into the top corner of the goal at 83:52. The play was assisted by Vanessa Patry and Sydney Stoll.

Canfield added insurance at 89:37 when she took a pass from Patry, which strung her on a breakaway.

The two teams finished even with ten shots a piece. UMass had four corner-kicks to Xavier's three, while the Musketeers had more fouls, 9-6. Farrell did not record any saves on the afternoon while Walker made three.

The Minutewomen head home to host the University of Rhode Island on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Rudd Field. Admission is free to all. Fans can also watch live through UMass All-Access or follow the action with Gametracker.
