UMass Battles to Tie in Home Opener

AMHERST, Mass. - The home opener for UMass ended in a tie after the Minuteman took a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Cory Quirk and James Marcou, but UMass Lowell responded with two goals in the second period to tie the game for a final score of 2-2 on Friday night at the Mullins Center in front of 5,862 fans. UMass will face rival Connecticut tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
In overtime, Will Ortiz was called for tripping just 36 seconds into the extra frame. UMass Lowell pressured the UMass defense, but Dainton was up to the task, turning away two Lowell opportunities to preserve the tie.
The Minutemen opened the first period dictating the play, pressuring the Lowell defense and generating shots on Lowell goaltender Nevin Hamilton. When UMass went on a two man advantage with 8:04 left in the first period, junior Cory Quirk gave the Minutemen the lead when he poked home a rebound past Hamilton. P.J. Fenton and James Marcou assisted on the goal.
Three minutes later, Marcou went back to work, taking a pass from Alex Berry and eluding a defender to put the puck in the back of the net. It was Marcou's first collegiate goal. The Minutemen outshot UMass Lowell 11-7 in the period.
The second period began with UMass Lowell coming out firing, stealing the momentum from the Minutemen and outshooting their counterparts 13-4. Lowell got on the board almost five minutes into the second stanza as Barry Goers took a pass from Chris Auger that beat UMass goalie Paul Dainton. The Riverhawks tied the game six minutes later on the power play when Maury Edwards blasted a shot from inside the faceoff dot and beat Dainton on the right side.
