AMHERST, Mass. - After reaching the 2006 National Championship game, the UMass football team will face a pair of local foes as the 2007 football schedule has been released. The Minutemen will host Holy Cross on Sept. 1 in the season opener at McGuirk Stadium. UMass will play at Boston College for the second time in four years as it travels to Chestnut Hill for the Sept. 29 match-up. It is the first time that UMass will play both HC and BC in the same year since 1982.
"To play Boston College and Holy Cross brings us back to match-ups against our traditional rivals from the past," said Don Brown, who was named the A-10 and Regional Coach of the Year in 2006. "We think our fans will enjoy playing teams in the state."
The 2007 season marks the start of the Colonial Athletic Association football league. All 12 teams from the Atlantic 10 football league made the transition to the CAA, meaning their will not be much difference in scheduling with eight conference games once again.
"Being in the CAA, means we are changing the league flag," said Brown. "We are excited about keeping the conference intact and look forward to playing under the new banner of the CAA with many top-flight teams."
After a road game at Colgate on Sept. 8, UMass hosts Towson for the first time in history to kickoff the CAA schedule on Sept. 15. The Minutemen travel to Maine for a Sept. 22 game. That is followed by the clash at Boston College.
The bye week comes after the BC game.
UMass will play its final six games within conference beginning with a pair of host games against Villanova on Oct. 13, which is Band Day and vs. Northeastern for Homecoming on Oct. 20.
After a pair of road games at William & Mary on Oct. 27 and at Rhode Island on Nov. 3, UMass hosts its home finale in the highly-anticipated rematch with New Hampshire on Nov. 10.
The regular wraps with the Hofstra game for the fourth year in a row, on Nov. 17 on Long Island.
All dates are subject to change and times will be announced in the future.
