NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Sophomore Vanessa Patry scored twice and added an assist, Britt Canfield registered her first goal of the season and Stephanie Barrett added two helpers as UMass went on to defeat Iona 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Minutewomen improve to 2-1 on the season with the win heading into Thursday's match at Hartford.
"We struggled a bit with field turf in first half," said Head Coach Jim Rudy. "We couldn't get the game under control. But Britt got a great goal to open it up. In the second half we took it to them, pushed a lot of people and got everyone in the game."
Canfield's goal at 35:18 opened the scoring for UMass, assisted by co-captain Nadia Villarroel and Patry. Patry's eventual gamewinner opened the second half at 50:50 followed by her second of the match just under three minutes later on a header. Barrett assisted on both tallies.
Iona's Maggie Prairie spoiled the shutout for the Minutewomen with the goal coming at 55:41. In her third start of the season, UMass goalie Kristin Walker made a season-high five saves in net. Ticiana DiCarlo made two for the loss.
UMass returns to action on Thursday at 6 p.m. when it faces Hartford on the road. The Minutewomen return home on Sunday, Sept. 10 when they host Albany at 4 p.m.
