Richmond Defeats UMass 4-0 In The A-10 Semifinals

Monroeville, Pa. - The UMass women's tennis team finished a long day by falling to top-seeded Richmond 4-0. Playing their second match in five hours proved to be too much to overcome. The Minutewomen now look ahead to their last match of the season, a clash with Xavier tomorrow afternoon.
The Minutewomen did not make it easy for the Spiders as Richmond needed to fight for every point. In doubles, seniors Dorothy Iwanowicz and Susan Johnson fell, 8-4. Stephanie Gimenez and Jana Bartoloni fell 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. Michele Spiess and Masha Pozar were in a battle at No. 1 doubles. They were down 6-3, but did not finish.
In singles play, Richmond won Nos. 3, 5, and 6 to win the match. Michele Spiess was in her second set, but did not finish. Masha Pozar and Dorothy Iwanowicz suffered the same fate. When it was all said and done, despite UMass not winning a single point, it was evident they gave Richmond a difficult time. But the two-time defending A-10 champions pulled out the victory in the end.
The Minuetwomen look to better their record to 7-2 vs. Atlantic 10 opponents tomorrow afternoon. They take on Xavier at 1:00 p.m. with third place in the conference on the line.
