AMHERST, Mass. - Just when you thought it couldn't get any better, the view at the Mullins Center is about to improve quite significantly. The 10,500 seat mid-sized arena began a major upgrade project Thursday with the installation of two brand new digital video scoreboards that will replace the current scoreboards located at either end of the arena. The new boards will allow fans to follow the games and feel even closer to the action. Full play-by-play action, instant replays, and fun promotional activities are just some of the exciting ways the boards will be used to enhance all of the events at the Mullins Center.

The project, which began back in September, has been spearheaded by Global Spectrum (the facility's management company) and UMass Athletics in an effort to make the overall experience that much more enjoyable when fans come to the building. Fans will now be able to see a replay of a last second shot at a basketball game, or an incredible goal at a hockey game. The boards will use LED technology to provide a great view of the action. Along with the digital boards, a full service control room and five camera locations are being installed at the arena.

The video boards will be installed where the current boards are located and will feature back-lit sponsor panels on either side of the boards. Sponsors already involved in the project include: Coca Cola, UMass Auxillary Services, Bank of America, and Big Y World Class Market. A very limited number of signage space is still available, and can be reserved by contacting Thorr Bjorn, Senior Associate Athletic Director at (413) 577-0232.

Global Spectrum, the fastest growing firm in the public assembly facility management field with more than 40 facilities throughout the United States and Canada, manages Mullins Center. The Philadelphia-based company is part of one of the world's largest sports and entertainment firm Comcast-Spectacor, which also owns the Wachovia Center and Wachovia Spectrum, the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association, the Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League, Flyers Skate Zone, a series of community ice skating rinks, Comcast SportsNet, a regional sports programming network, Ovations Food Services, a food and beverage services provider, and New Era Tickets, a full-service ticketing and marketing product for public assembly facilities. Comcast-Spectacor owns three minor league baseball teams - the Bowie Baysox, the Delmarva Shorebirds and the Frederick Keys - all affiliates of the Baltimore Orioles.
