Coen Wins Second Golden Helmet Of The Season

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Massachusetts quarterback Liam Coen, who sparked the Minutemen to a win against Towson last weekend, and Southern Connecticut linebacker Rossi Patterson, who led the Owl defense in a win over Pace, received the Boston Globe Gold Helmet Awards Wednesday at the New England Football Writers luncheon at Harvard's Dillon Field house.
Coen, the Division I-AA winner, earned Atlantic-10 player of the week honors for the second time this season after throwing a school record-tying five touchdown passes in the 35-0 win over Towson. Coen, the nation's leader in pass efficiency, completed 21 of 27 passes for 303 yards, surpassing the 300-yard passing mark for the fourth time in his 16-game career and the second time this season.
Patterson, the Division II/III winner, was named the Northeast-10 defensive player of the week after leading the Owls to a 28-0 win over Pace. Patterson had two interceptions on the day for 73 yards, including one that went for a 59-yard touchdown. Patterson recorded nine tackles in the shutout victory.
A pair of undefeated Ivy League teams match up in Division I-AA this weekend as No. 15 Harvard faces No. 22 Princeton. The other marquee game in the Ancient Eight has Yale hosting Penn in a battle of Ivy unbeatens. The Atlantic-10 slate has sixth-ranked Massachusetts hosting Rhode Island while No. 7 New Hampshire heads to Northeastern. Holy Cross hosts Lafayette in a Patriot League matchup, while Central Connecticut hosts Wagner and Sacred Heart heads to Stony Brook in Northeast Conference games.
In Division II, Southern Connecticut hosts No. 21 C.W. Post in a Friday-night matchup. Saturday's schedule sees Assumption at Merrimack, while American International hosts Pace, Saint Anselm travels to Bryant and Stonehill heads to Bentley.
Three undefeated schools in Division III are in action Saturday as No. 20 Springfield travels to St. John Fisher, unbeaten Williams hosts Tufts, while Curry looks to remain perfect when it heads to Plymouth State. Other games in the New England Football Conference have Coast Guard at Worcester State, Fitchburg State at Mass Maritime, Maine Maritime at Framingham State, Westfield State at Bridgewater State, UMass Dartmouth at Nichols, and MIT at Salve Regina. The NESCAC schedule has Hamilton at Colby, Trinity at Bowdoin, Bates at Middlebury, and Amherst at Wesleyan. Other games include Alfred at Husson, Hartwick at Mount Ida, and Rochester at WPI.
