AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Fairfield on Saturday afternoon, falling to 3-5-1 on the season. The Stags won the game on a free kick just 17:34 into the contest. This game closed out the nonconference portion of the season, as UMass opens up the Atlantic 10 season on Friday when it hosts Fordham at 3:30.
"We had our chances, but that's the second game in a row that we gave up an early goal on a free kick," said head coach Jim Rudy. "We switched things up again later in the second to open things up, but couldn't connect."
Despite outshooting their opponents 12-11, it was the Stags that connected early on. Ahna Johnson was awarded the free kick on a UMass foul, and Laura Mrowski collected her rebound off the post, shooting it past Kristin Walker for the one-goal edge.
Walker made six saves in the game, and Kaelyn Caldwell stepped in as well, making a stop on an excellent Fairfield scoring chance. Johnson ran in all alone and shot the ball on Walker, then collected the rebound and shot again while the UMass goalkeeper was down. But Caldwell came up big for UMass and cleared the ball, keeping it a 1-0.
Jenny Roehrig led her team in shots, taking four in the game. Lindsey Bellini and Britt Canfield each took three. Fairfield was awarded four corner kicks to UMass' one, while fouls were 10 Fairfield, 13 Massachusetts.
