Tennis Fares Well On Day 1 Of Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Massachusetts tennis team opened up its 2005 fall season Friday night at the Quinnipiac Invitational and fared well. Four Minutewomen advanced to quarterfinal singles play. Junior Michele Spiess (Stuttgart, Germany), senior Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.), senior Susan Johnson (Arnold, Md.), freshman Lauren MacKay (Redding, Conn.) and freshman Carly Ludmer (Demarest, N.J.) each won their singles match Friday and will move on in the tournament.
In Flight A action, Spiess defeated Hanna Chovanova of Stony Brook in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore Masha Pozar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) lost to Katrina Elder-Bush of Rutgers in a three-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 4-6, 3-10.
Freshman Stephanie Gimenez (Alphaville, Brazil) was defeated by Stony Brook's Sandy Wijertane, 3-6, 2-6. Iwanowicz knocked off Stony Brook's Erica Federgreen, 6-2, 6-1.
Johnson beat UConn's Ashley Petruzzi, 6-3, 6-4, while senior Lesley Fisher (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was beaten by Nicole Admas of Quinnipiac, 3-6, 5-7.
Sophomore Kristin DiPiero (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) lost to Victoria Vasile of Stony Brook, 3-6, 1-6.
A pair of freshmen closed out the singles play with a pair of wins. MacKay defeated Emily Portner of UMBC, 6-4, 6-3, while Ludmer beat Abby Funabiki of Quinnipiac, 6-3, 6-3.
Quarterfinal play begins Saturday morning and the tournament runs through Sunday morning.
