Amherst, Mass. - The UMass football team completed spring workouts with a controlled scrimmage at McGuirk-Alumni Stadium. Quarterback Liam Coen, taking most of the snaps, completed 13 of 18 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown.
"I thought Liam did a good job handling the club," said Head Coach Don Brown. "It was kind of what we expected of him after a year in the program."
Coen's leading receiver was Dominique Stewart, who had three catches for 47 yards. Brandon London's only reception was a 19-yard scoring toss from Coen. J.J. Moore had one catch for 23 yards and Chris Hopkins had one catch for 28 yards.
Last year's starting quarterback Tim Day only played in the non-contact seven-on-seven skeleton passing drills and looked sharp throwing the ball. Taylor Humphrey, who transferred from Hawaii, was 3-for-9 for 39 yards and an interception.
On the ground, last year's leading rusher, Steve Baylark carried four times for 44 yards. His longest was a 23 yard gain. R.J. Cobbs, playing wide receiver this season, had two reverses for 33 yards. One of his carries was a 23 yard run for a touchdown. He also had one catch for 13 yards.
Defensively, linebacker Cesar Rosario had three tackles and an interception, that he returned 33 yards for a touchdown. Defensive back Shannon James had five tackles and defensive back Tracy Belton had four. Freshman lilnebacker Darnel DeLaire had a fumble recovery.
Coach Brown was pleased with the scrimmage and reported no injuries.
"We want our players to get in the best shape they can," said Brown. "It's back to bigger, stronger, faster."
UMass opens the season on Thursday September 1 at Richmond.
