Five Student-Athletes Earn A-10 Weekly Honors

AMHERST, Mass. -- Five Massachusetts student-athletes earned Atlantic 10 Weekly honors the conference office announced Monday afternoon. Denise Denis (Middle Grove, N.Y.) was named the Softball Player of the Week, Stacy Cullington (Encinitas, Calif.) was the Softball Rookie of the Week, Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.) was named Baseball Player of the Week, Michele Spiess (Stuttgart, Germany) was named the Tennis Performer of the Week and Masha Pozar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) was selected as the Tennis Rookie of the Week.
Denis went 4-6 (.667) in a doubleheader sweep of Dayton Saturday. She had a double, two home runs and five RBI. Denis had two home runs in game one against the Flyers marking her first career multi-home run game. She scored three runs and also walked twice Saturday while compiling a 1.833 slugging percentage. Denis also had a 2.583 OPS (on-base plus slugging).
She batted .500 (2-4) in the twinbill with two doubles, three RBI and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Cullington came to bat as a pinch hitter in game one and drove a two-RBI double off the right field fence, missing a home run by inches. She also had an RBI double in game two while making a start as the designated player.
Spess went 2-0 at second singles and 2-0 at second doubles against a pair of Atlantic 10 opponents. She earned a 6-3, 0-6, 6-0 win over Temple on March 24 as well as an 8-0 doubles win and also picked up a 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 singles win and an 8-6 doubles win over Richmond the next day. Her singles match against Richmond lasted four hours. She is 14-3 in singles play and 10-7 in doubles competition this season. This is her second Performer of the Week award of the season.
Pozar earned a couple of second doubles wins this past week. She teamed with Performer of the Week Michele Spiess to record wins over Temple (8-0, Mar. 24) and Richmond (8-6, Mar. 25). This is her second Rookie of the Week award of the season.
Twomley cracked three home runs and went 7-for-10 in Massachusetts' three-game series at Xavier (Mar. 26-27 He scored six of the Minutemen's nine runs on the weekend and drove in three. He was in the lineup for the first time since Mar. 5 due to injury.
