Six Student-Athletes Earn A-10 Weekly Honors

AMHERST, Mass. -- Six different Massachusetts student-athletes have earned either Atlantic 10 Player of the Week or Rookie of the Week honors the league office announced this afternoon. Junior Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) was named A-10 Baseball co-Pitcher of the Week, senior Denise Denis (Middle Grove, N.Y.) was named A-10 Softball Player of the Week, senior Barb LaFogg (Williamsburg, Mass.) was named A-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week, junior Kerri Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) was named A-10 Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week, freshman Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) was named A-10 Women's Lacrosse co-Rookie of the Week and freshman Masha Pozar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) was named A-10 Tennis Rookie of the Week.
On March 5 at Delaware, Torra tossed 8.0 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs in a 3-2 extra-inning loss. He struck out a season-high 14 batters while giving up just one walk. In a 5-0 win on March 12 over Eastern Kentucky, Torra pitched a complete game shutout, allowing a mere four hits and fanning seven batters.
Connerty earned her second Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week honor of her career after scoring a career-high six goals against visiting Albany on Sunday. She also assisted on two other scores to give her a career-high eight points in the 19-10 win. For her career, Connerty has now scored 10 goals and posted seven assists against the Danes. Last season it was her go-ahead goal that secured the 17-15 UMass win as they fought back from a second-half deficit. In this season's meeting, it was her final goal of the game which ended a three-goal Albany rally pulling the Danes within five, 14-9, which sealed the victory.
Typadis posted her fourth hat trick in as many games in the win over Albany on Sunday en route to earning A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week honors. This is her second league honor this season. Typadis is now the first UMass freshman to record hat tricks in her first four games in the last decade. Typadis also handed out two assists, collected two ground balls, caused two turnovers, controlled three draws and was 2-for-2 on free position shots. She leads the Minutewomen with 14 goals and four assists. Joanna Dignazio of the 1995 squad holds the modern era record for rookie scoring with 38 points on 33 goals and five assists. Last week, in a 12-7 loss at Harvard, Typadis scored four second half goals to rally UMass.
Pozar, who competes primarily at No. 2 singles, went 2-2 in four UMass matches over the last two weekends. On March 5, Pozar was victorious against UMBC and defeated Lynn yesterday, who is ranked No. 4 in Division II. In the win against Lynn, she won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Pozar dropped two matches against Binghamton on March 5 and Cornell on March 6. All of Pozar's matches were played at No. 2 singles.
In the past two weeks, LaFogg went 5-3 with a 2.22 ERA. She allowed 14 earned runs in 44.1 innings while striking out 48. In a win over No. 22 Florida International on March 5, she struck out 12 batters in a shutout win. She also pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts in a 2-1 win over BYU on March 11. LaFogg hurled three hitless innings with six strikeouts in an extra inning win against BYU. LaFogg was also named the Dinn Brothers/UMass co-Athlete of the Week.
Denis batted .385 in 10 games. She had two doubles, one triple, two home runs and 10 RBI for the Minutewomen. In a win over No. 22 Florida International last week, Denis was 3-for-3 with the game-winning three-run home run. Denis also hit a home run against Central Michigan on March 12. She compiled a .769 slugging percentage on the week.
