AMHERST, Mass. - After leading the University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team and men's track team, freshman Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) and junior James Godinho (Sandwich, Mass.) have earned weekly awards for their performances. Typadis earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors, while Godinho was named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week.
Typadis scored three goals and assisted on another in her rookie debut as the Minutewomen defeated Holy Cross 14-11 in their season-opener. After UMass was down early 4-0 in the game, Typadis sparked a rally scoring back-to-back goals to help the Minutewomen tie the game at 4-4. Her goal 52 seconds into the second half capped a 6-0 scoring flurry from UMass making the score 10-5. She picked up her first career assist when she found Lindsay Cassell for the 13th Massachusetts goal of the game. In her first collegiate start, Typadis led the `Mass Attack' taking eight shots in the game.
Winning his third 500 meter dash of the season, Godinho took first in 1:02.98 at the New England Track & Field Championships to break the UMass record for the third time in his career. Godinho led the Minutemen to seventh-place finish out of 36 teams in the prestigious event. Entering the season, he held the fastest time in school history for the event at 1:03.76 which he set last season also at the New England Championships. He cracked that time at the Boston University Valentine Invitational (2/12) earlier this season before repeating the feat last weekend at the same track. Godinho also betters his IC4A qualifying mark and looks to improve on his 14th-place finish from a season ago.
The UMass Sports Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, March 2 at Noon in Room 1009 of the Campus Center.
