Ski Teams Each Finish Second At Boston College Carnival

ASCUTNEY, Vt. - Freshman Eliza Hawkins (Shelburne, Mass.) swept the slalom and the giant slalom while brother sophomore Rush Hawkins (Shelburne, Mass.) took home first and second place finishes as the brother sister duo lead the Umass men's and women's ski team to impressive finishes at the Boston College Winter Carnival. Both the Minutemen and Minutewomen finished in the top-five in both events as the men finished fourth in both the slalom and giant slalom and the women placed second in the giant slalom and fifth in the slalom.
Rush Hawkins won the slalom event with a time of 1:46.37 and remained undefeated in the event. Freshman Jason Small(Shelburne Falls, Mass.) and senior Patrick Hofer (New Canaan, Mass.) also placed in the top-10 for the Minutemen with times of 1:50.61 and 1:51.22 respectively. Hawkins and Small tied for second place in the giant slalom as both skiers finished with a time of 1:33.84. Senior Marc Epstein (Carlisle, Mass.) also posted a top-20 finish in the giant slalom as he placed 18th with a time of 1:37.09
For the Minutewomen, Eliza Hawkins and junior Caitlin Doughty (Quincy, Mass.) were the catalysts behind the women's second place finish in the giant slalom. Hawkins, the overall winner, finished with a time of 1:36.68 while Doughty placed eighth with a time of 1:42.08. Eliza Hawkins pulled off a close victory in the slalom with a time of 1:59.39, just three hundredths of a second faster than runner up Kelly O'Hare of Brown. Doughty was only other Minutewoman in the top-20 as she finished 18th with a time of 2:04.64
Both teams will finish out their regular season next weekend as they travel to Sunapee, N.H. on Saturday for the Colby/Sawyer Carnival and then to Pat's Peak on Sunday for the St. Anslem's Carnival.
