No. 7 UMass Upended At Hofstra, 21-10

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The No. 7 UMass football team suffered a tough 21-10 loss at Hofstra on Saturday. The Minutemen fall to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the Atlantic 10. The loss severely hurts UMass' chances of an NCAA Division I-AA playoff berth as no team with four losses has ever received an at-large bid. Brandon London had 13 catches, tying for the most ever in a game by a UMass receiver. J.J. Moore also had 13 at Colgate earlier this year.
Notes
* UMass' Don Brown coached his 100th game as a head coach. He now has a 65-35 career record.
* Steve Baylark finished with 73 rushing yards as he surpassed the 1,000-yard plateau for the third year in a row. Baylark is the fourth UMass player to run for more than 1,000 yards in three seasons, joining Marcel Shipp, Rene Ingoglia and Garry Pearson.
* Baylark will have a chance to become just the seventh player in Division I-A and I-AA history to compiled four 1,000-yard seasons in his career. Only two players have accomplished it in I-AA: Jerry Azumah (New Hampshire, 1995-98) and Adrian Peterson (Georgia Southern, 1998-2001). In I-A, it has been done by: Tony Dorsett (Pittsburgh, 1973-76), Amos Lawrence (North Carolina, 1977-80), Denvis Manns (New Mexico State, 1995-98) and Ron Dayne (Wisconsin, 1996-99). Of current Division I-AA players, Hampton's Alonzo Coleman and Harvard's Clifton Dawson with both have chances for 1,000-yards in four years as they return next season as well in addition to Baylark.
* Baylark scored his 27th career rushing touchdown to tie for fourth all-time at UMass in career rushing TDs with Lou Bush (1931-33). It was also Baylark's 29th career overall touchdown, tying Jason Peebler for sixth in career scores.
* Brandon London had 13 catches and now has 98 in his career to move to eighth all-time in career receptions at UMass. London also had 122 yards receiving and is now ninth all-time in career receiving yards with 1241 passing Milt Morin (1151).
* Dominique Stewart had three catches and has 92 in his career to stand tied for 10th all-time with Jimmy Moore, who had all his catches in the 1998 season.
* UMass allowed a 100-yard rusher for just the second time this season as Hofstra's Terry Crenshaw picked up 115 yards.
Fourth Quarter Notes
* Hofstra sealed the game as Stanley Gutierrez intercepted Tim Day with 2:57 left in the game and returned the ball 14 yards to the Hofstra 48-yard line.
* Steve Baylark had a 40-yard reception with 3:20 left in the fourth for the longest reception in his career.
* Brandon London caught his 13th pass of the game on the final play -- tying for the most receptions in a game in UMass history. J.J. Moore had 13 catches at Colgate earlier this year on Sept. 10, 2004 to set the UMass record. Prior to this season, the most catches in a game for a UMass player 11 by Tim Berra (1973), Jimmy Moore (1998) and Adrian Zullo (twice in 1999).
* London reached 100 yards third time in his career on his 12 catch, giving him an even 100 yards.
* Tim Day ended the game at quarterback for UMass with 5:35 left in the game after Liam Coen suffered an injury on the previous series.
* Christian Koegel had his third punt inside the 20-yard line in the game with a 45-yarder that was downed at the Hofstra 14-yard line with 10:11 left in the fourth.
* Brandon London set a career-high with his 10th catch with about 11 minutes left in the fourth. The catch moved him to eighth all-time at UMass passing DeShon Hardy (94). Earlier in the game, he passed Jimmy Moore (92).
HOFSTRA, 21-10: Kareem Huggins rushed in from four yards out to give Hofstra a 21-10 lead with 13:11 left in the fourth.
* Marques Colston hauled in a 64-yard pass from Anton Clarkson with 13:58 left in the fourth quarter as he was tackled at the UMass 6-yard line setting up Hofstra's next touchdown. It was the longest play against UMass this season surpassing the 57-yard pass play by Maine's combination of Ron Whitcomb to Kevin McMahan.
HOFSTRA, 14-10: Armando Cuko kicked a 23-yard field goal four seconds into the fourth quarter to make the score 14-10. It was the third consecutive made field goal for Cuko.
Third Quarter Notes
* Hofstra's Anton Clarkson went over the 100-yard mark late in the third quarter to become just the second 100-yard rusher against UMass this season and first in six weeks as Rhode Island's Joe Casey gained 148 on Sept. 24.
* Justin Schweighardt and Keron Williams shared a sack of Clarkson for a loss of six yards.
* Hofstra's Cole Haley sacked Liam Coen for a 7-yard loss with 8:06 left in the third quarter - the Pride's third sack of the game. Coen had only been sacked six times all season coming into the game. It was the most sacks UMass has allowed in a game since the Colgate playoff game in 2003.
HOFSTRA, 14-7: Terry Crenshaw ran in from five yards to give Hofstra a 12-7 lead. Crenshaw then ran for the 2-point conversion to put the Pride ahead 14-7 with 12:23 left in the third quarter.
* Marques Colston hauled in a 51-yard pass from Anton Clarkson to the UMass 7-yard line setting up Hofstra's first touchdown of the game.
Second Quarter Notes
* Liam Coen was sacked by Shemiah LeGrand for a 10-yard loss to end the first half, for just the 10th sack on a UMass quarterback this season, second in the game.
* Shannon James recovered his third fumble of the season with 26 seconds left in the first half as Brad Anderson forced Hofstra's Anton Clarkson into a fumble at the UMass 16-yard line. It was the second Hofstra turnover in the red zone. Anderson was credited with a sack on the play, his second of the game and third in two weeks.
* Anderson sacked Anton Clarkson for a 5-yard loss with 2:05 left in the half.
UMASS, 7-6: UMass took the lead 7-6 as Steve Baylark ran in from five yards out with 3:59 left in the first half. Armando Cuko added the extra point.
* Baylark scored his 27th career rushing touchdown to tie for fourth all-time at UMass in career rushing TDs with Lou Bush (1931-33). It was also Baylark's 29th career overall touchdown, tying Jason Peebler for sixth in career scores.
* Chris Hopkins made his second-career catch and first of 2005 with an 8-yard grab with 4:15 left in the second quarter.
*Steve Baylark had his first-career kickoff return in the second quarter with a 15-yard return.
HOFSTRA, 6-0: Rob Zarrilli made a 28-yard field goal with 9:55 left in the second quarter give Hofstra a 6-0 lead. UMass opponents moved to 8-for-8 on field goals.
*Stephen Tate intercepted Liam Coen with 12:25 left in the second quarter and returned the ball six yards to the UMass 47-yard line.
First Quarter Notes
* Hofstra outgained UMass 115-41 in total yardage in the first quarter.
* Steve Baylark went over the 1,000-yard plateau for the third year in a row with a 3-yard rush on the final play of the first quarter.
* Liam Coen went over the 2,000-yard passing barrier in his first season of action with a 10-yard pass in the first quarter to Brandon London. Coen joined Matt Guice (2,266 in 2001) as the only freshmen to pass the 2,000-yard passing mark.
* Coen's first three completions of the game were all 10-yard passes to London.
* Cole Haley had a 5-yard sack of Liam Coen with 2:32 left in the first quarter.
HOFSTRA, 3-0: Hofstra took a 3-0 lead as Rob Zarrilli nailed a 42-yard field goal with 2:56 left in the first quarter. That kick made UMass opponents a perfect 7-for-7 on field goals this season.
* Jason Hatchell had his first career sack with 3:16 left in the first quarter for a 7-yard loss on Hofstra quarterback Anton Clarkson.
* Christian Koegel had his 16th punt of the season inside the 20-yard line as his second punt of the game went 42 yards and landed at the Hofstra 6-yard line.
* Tracy Belton intercepted his second pass of the season just 1:35 into the game. Both interceptions have come in the last three games. Belton now has 11 career interceptions.
* UMass won the toss and received the game's opening kickoff.
