AMHERST, Mass. - UMass posted its biggest offensive output of the year as the Minutewomen downed Duquesne, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at a soaking wet Rudd Field. The win evened the Minutewomen's overall record at 6-6-1 while they moved to 3-1 in the Atlantic-10. For the Dukes, it was just their third loss of the season and second in the A-10 as they stand at 9-3-1 overall, 4-2 in the league. It was UMass' largest shutout victory in four years to the day, as they blanked Duquesne, 7-0, on Oct. 14, 2001.
Sophomore Vanessa Lima (Amherst, Mass.) registered her first career two-goal game at UMass scoring a pair of goals in a span of 3:33 in the early second half to put the game out of reach.
Senior defender Tiffany Hamill (Syracuse, N.Y.) opened the scoring with her first career goal just 6:06 into the game as she scored from 15 yards out beating Duquesne keeper Virginia Bondi to the top right corner of the net. Senior Adair Blyler (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Vanessa Patry (Delmar, N.Y.) were credited with assists on the goal.
Sophomore forward Britt Canfield (Granville, Mass.) made it 2-0 as she scored in a breakaway where she out ran three defenders five minutes into the second half.
Lima netted her back-to-back goals as took passes from senior Lindsey Bellini (Webster, N.Y.) and Patry, respectively, to beat Bondi twice at 53:01 and 56:34.
The four-goal total was the most UMass scored since a 4-1 win over Holy Cross last season on Sept. 27. It was the largest margin of victory for the Minutewomen since they beat Temple, 6-1, on Oct. 25, 2002.
In goal, Kristen Walker (Lincoln Park, N.J.) made six saves for her sixth shutout of the season. Every win for UMass this season has been a shutout.
UMass hosts its final regular-season game on Sunday as A-10 leading Saint Louis (10-3, 5-0) comes to Rudd Field for a 1 p.m. showdown. Listen live to the broadcast on UMassAthletics.com or follow all the action on Gametracker on UMassAthletics.com
