DOVER, Del. (AP) - Tim Day accounted for half of the offense, throwing for 290 yards and four touchdowns, as visiting University of Massachusetts beat Delaware State 51-0 on Saturday.
Day finished 17-for-19 for the Minutemen (1-0). Jason Peebler had five catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns, including an 80-yard scoring pass with 8:09 left in the first half. J.J. Moore and Mike Douglas caught one touchdown apiece.
Massachusetts, who had 20 penalties, scored on the first four possessions and made it 35-0 early in the third quarter when Brandon Freeman recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown.
Mike Torres made six extra points and a 38-yard field goal in the third quarter. Matt Goldstein came off the bench to make two field goals in the fourth quarter.
Afumiya McFaffen led Delaware State (0-1) with 60 yards rushing, while quarterback Andre Smith passed for 120 yards. Thomas Bolden had seven catches for the Hornets.
The Minutemen had 486 yards of total offense and held Delaware State to 175 yards. The win was the largest opening game shutout in Massachusetts history.
