AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts sophomore forward Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year announced this evening at the Atlantic 10 Postseason Awards Banquet in Dayton, Ohio.
Freeman, who leads the Minutemen with 15.3 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game, was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week seven times this season, the fourth-most Rookie of the Week honors in Atlantic 10 history, behind only Lamar Odom (Rhode Island, 10, 1999), Yinka Dare (George Washington, nine, 1993), and Mark Macon (Temple, nine, 1988). He becomes the third UMass player to earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year honors and first since current teammate Anthony Anderson (Lynn, Mass.) won the award in 2002.
The Empire-state native has posted 10 double-doubles this season to rank second in the A-10, a figure that sits as the highest by a UMass player since Tyrone Weeks posted 12 during the 1996-97 season.
In addition, freshman Art Bowers (Wilmington, Del.) was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team along with Freeman. Bowers ranks fourth on the squad averaging 9.3 points per game and 3.3 assists per game. The last UMass player to land on that list was also Anderson.
The Minutemen (10-18 overall, 4-12 Atlantic 10) return to action on Wednesday, March 10, when they face Duquesne in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Tip-off for the contest between the Minutemen and the Dukes is set for 7:00 p.m. at the University of Dayton Arena.
