AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts sophomore forward Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week in men's basketball, for games from February 29-March 6. This marks the seventh time this season Freeman has received the award from the Atlantic 10, the fourth-most Rookie of the Week honors in Atlantic 10 history, behind only Lamar Odom (Rhode Island, 10, 1999), Yinka Dare (George Washington, nine, 1993), and Mark Macon (Temple, nine, 1988).
Freeman averaged 18.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in a pair of games for the Minutemen last week, while hitting 63.6 percent (14 of 22) of his shots from the floor. He opened the week by totaling 10 points and 12 rebounds in the 98-92 double overtime loss at Temple on March 3. That performance was his team-best 11th double-double of the season. Freeman finished the week by totaling a game-high 27 points and seven rebounds in the 69-65 loss at Richmond on March 6. The 27 points were the second-highest total of his collegiate career.
The Minutemen (10-18 overall, 4-12 Atlantic 10) return to action on Wednesday, March 10, when they face Duquesne in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Tip-off for the contest between the Minutemen and the Dukes is set for 7:00 p.m. at the University of Dayton Arena.
