AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman Ashley Maxfield (Craftsbury Common, Vt.) of the University of Massachusetts women's ski team won both the Slalom and the Giant Slalom races at the Boston College Carnival held at Ascutney Mountain over the weekend. Maxfield finished first out of 51 competitors in the Slalom with a two-run time of 1:43.32 marking the fourth consecutive week she has won the event. In the Giant Slalom she finished first out of 50 competitors with a two-run time of 1:44.48 to mark the second consecutive week she has won the GS. As a team, UMass women's placed third in the Slalom and placed second in the GS.

Also turning in impressive runs for the women in the Slalom was freshman Jen Barranger (Lanesboro, Mass.) who placed 12th overall with a time of 1:52.75. In the Giant Slalom, sophomore Caitlin Doughty (North Quincy, Mass.) turned in a top-10 time of 1:46.18 placing her fifth overall while sophomore Lisbet Rauh (Princeton, Mass.) placed 14th with a time of 1:49.49 to round out the UMass effort.

On the men's side, freshman Rush Hawkins (Shelburne, Mass.) won the Slalom and finished second in the Giant Slalom to extend his impressive start to the year. Hawkins has placed in the top three of every race he has finished (including five first place showings). In the Slalom he placed first out of 69 competitors with a two-run time of 1:40.41 helping the men's team to a third place finish. In the Giant Slalom, he placed second out of 66 competitors with a two-run time of 1:39.25 helping the men's team to a fifth place finish.

Individually in the Slalom, Hawkins' win was more than two seconds faster than the next closest competitor who turned in a time of 1:42.83. Senior captain David Pomeroy (Winthrop, Mass.) placed eighth overall with a time of 1:45.12 while sophomore Patrick Bachant (Hubbardston, Mass.) placed 16th with a time of 1:47.34. In the Giant Slalom, Hawkins placed second with a two-run time of 1:38.48. Pomeroy placed sixth with a time of 1:42.00 while senior Nate Barr (Acton, Mass.) placed 22nd with a time of 1:45.85.

The UMass men's and women's ski teams both return to action this weekend as they travel to Mount Sunapee in Newbury, Vt., for the Colby-Sawyer Slalom Carnival on Saturday, Feb. 14. On Sunday, Feb. 15 the teams will travel to Pat's Peak in Henniker, Vt. for the Saint Anselm Giant Slalom Carnival.
