AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts sophomore forward Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week in men's basketball, for games from Feb. 22-28. This marks the sixth time this season Freeman has received the award from the Atlantic 10, tying for the fourth-most Rookie of the Week honors in Atlantic 10 history.
Freeman averaged 26.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in two games last week, while hitting 68.8 percent (22 of 32) of his field goal attempts. He opened the week by scoring 21 points on 8 of 13 shooting in the 83-58 loss to Saint Joseph's on Feb. 25. Freeman then came back with a career-high 31 points on 14 of 19 shooting, in the 82-71 win over Saint Bonaventure on Feb. 28. He also pulled down a career-best 18 rebounds in the victory over the Bonnies. Freeman's 31 points against Saint Bonaventure were the most by a UMass player since Monty Mack scored 32 at Xavier on Feb. 12, 2000. In addition, his 18 rebounds against the Bonnies were the most by a UMass player since Ajmal Basit had 19 at Rhode Island on Jan. 29, 1998. Freeman also set a Mullins Center record for rebounds (18), while tying the Mullins Center records for field goals made (14) and defensive rebounds (14).
The Minutemen (10-16 overall, 4-10 Atlantic 10) return to action on Wednesday, March 3, when they travel to Temple for an 8:00 p.m. game.
