Bowers Named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's basketball freshman guard Art Bowers (Wilmington, Del.) was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for his performance in UMass' two wins this past week. Bowers, who averaged 18.0 points, 6.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds over the week, is the third different Minuteman to win the award.
In a 76-70 win over Fordham on Jan. 28, Bowers registered 18 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. He shot six-for-11 from the field, including four-of-five from three-point range. In UMass' 67-63 win yesterday at Rhode Island, Bowers again scored 18 points, including a pair of threes to go along with four assists and two rebounds. He also shot six-for-10 from the field against the Rams. For the week he was was 12-for-21 (.571) from the field, six-for-nine (.667) from three-point range and six-for-eight (.750) from the line.
The award marks the seventh time a UMass player has been named Rookie of the Week as sophomore forward Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) has earned the honor five times and freshman guard Maurice Maxwell (Philadelphia, Pa.) has earned it once. Bowers' award also makes UMass one of just four teams in A-10 history to have three different players win Rookie of the Week awards in the same season (Xavier, 1995-96; La Salle, 2002-03; George Washington, 2003-04).
On the year, Bowers ranks third on the team averaging 9.6 points per game. He also averages 3.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per contest. UMass men's basketball (8-11, 3-5 Atlantic 10) has won three straight and returns to action this Tuesday, Feb. 3 as it travels to the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., for a 7:30 p.m. contest against Rider.
