UMass Names Fall Scholar-Athletes

AMHERST, Mass. - Junior Craig Canavan (Chicopee, Mass.) of the men's soccer team and senior forward Adrianne Monaco (Oxford, N.Y.) of the field hockey team were slated as the fall season's top scholar-athletes by the UMass Athletic Department. The two outstanding student-athletes will be honored at the weekly sports luncheon on Dec.15 at the Campus Center in Room 1009 beginning at 12:00 p.m.
Canavan appeared in 16 games for the Minutemen this season, starting 14 contests. The junior defender was an intricate part of the Massachusetts defense while also producing an assist on offense. Prior to UMass, Canavan spent five years in the United States Navy as a sonarman. During his tour of duty, he was a member of the All-Navy team and captained of the All-Armed Forces team comprised of players from all four branches of the armed services.
Academically, Canavan has posted a 3.64 grade point average and is majoring in finance operations management.
Monaco was a major offensive cog for the Minutewomen field hockey team that was the Atlantic 10 runner-up for both the regular season and conference tournament. She was second on the team in goals with five and dished out an assist. For her superior play, Monaco was named to both the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team as well as the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament team.
In the classroom, Monaco has been equally as stellar earning a 3.89 grade point average while majoring in psychology. Through the years she has received numerous academic awards.
Monaco has been named to the Field Hockey Coach's Association Academic All-American team and the UMass Athletic Council Honor Roll for earning the highest GPA on the field hockey team throughout her collegiate career. She also has been a member of the A-10 Academic All-Conference Team for the past three seasons.
The two athletes are also finalists for the UMass Scholar Athlete of the Year which will be announced at Varsity "M" Awards Dinner in May.
