Women's Tennis Defeats St. John's, 4-3

JAMAICA, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team defeated St. John's, 4-3, Friday afternoon, in its first dual meet of the fall season. The two teams split the six singles matches early in the day, putting the weight of the match on the three double matches. UMass was able to bring home the victory by sweeping the three matches, gaining the decisive point.
In the doubles' matches, the team of Jenny Munroe (Valencia, Calif.) / Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) defeated Leo / Liantonio, 8-4 in the first match. In the second doubles, Christine Liehr (Stuttgard, Germany) / Dorothy Iwanowicz (Weymouth, Mass.) won their match by the same score, 8-4, over Allison Davidson / Hande Gozur. The third singles team of Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) / Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel) took its match by a score of 8-3.
In first singles action, Munroe beat Lauren Leo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The Minutewomen went on to win two more singles matches, as Jana Bartoloni (Charlestown, Mass.) defeated Tessa Woodruff in the number five slot, 5-7, 6-1, 10-7. Elizabeth Coyner (Paducah, Ky.) was also victorious, winning the sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Jennifer Liantonio.
UMass will next be in action on Wednesday, Oct. 1, as they face Connecticut at home. The match is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
