Dixon To Coach The Freedom This Summer

AMHERST, Mass. - Judy Dixon, head coach of the University of Massachusetts women's tennis program, announced Wednesday that she will be the head coach of the Philadelphia Freedom, part of the World Team Tennis league, this summer. By accepting the position Dixon becomes one of two female coaches in the 12 team-league,
"I am excited about the possibility of taking on a new venture," said Dixon of her summer position. "I appreciate (UMass Athletic Director) Ian McCaw giving me permission to take this job and for giving me this opportunity."
The WTT, which is owned by Dixon's former doubles partner at Southern California, Billie Jean King, consists of a three week season that stretches from July 5-July 27, with the league finals taking place on August 23-24.
"As a friend of Billie Jean's , she is a person who inspires people to get on the bandwagon," Dixon said. "I am pleased to be able to play a part in her achieving her life-long dream."
The WTT draws some of the world's top tennis players, including Paul Goldstein, Patrick McEnroe, Boris Becker, Anna Kournikova and Don Johnson. Playing for Dixon on the Philadelphia Freedom will be tennis legend Martina Navratilova. Navratilova will play six matches for the Freedom, scheduled to take the court on July 10 against the Hartford FoxForce, in New York on July 19 against the New York Sportimes, in Hartford on July 20, at St. Louis against the Aces on July 24 and against the Newport Beach Breakers on July 26.
