AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore tailback Jason Peebler (Modesto, Calif.), a member of the University of Massachusetts football team, has been selected as the Dinn Brothers UMass Athlete of the Week, for the week ending Sept. 8. Peebler is the first football player this season to earn the honor, which goes to the top UMass athlete in all sports.

Playing at tailback for the first time in his collegiate career, Peebler rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, helping lead UMass to a 52-3 victory over Central Connecticut State in its season opener. He also had a nine-yard touchdown reception, giving him 135 all-purpose yards for the day. Peebler currently leads the Atlantic 10 Conference in both scoring (18.0 points per game) and rushing (126.0 yards per game), while ranking fourth in all-purpose yards (135.0 yards per game). He also stands third nationally in scoring, 11th in rushing and 48th in all-purpose yards. During his freshman season in 2001, Peebler played wide receiver and totaled 17 receptions for 231 yards and one touchdown.

UMass (1-0 overall, 0-0 Atlantic 10) returns to action on Saturday, September 14, when it plays host to American International College at 1:00 p.m. at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
