Crew Captures Seventh Straight A-10 Title

COLLINGSWOOD, N.J. -- The University of Massachusetts won its seventh Verizon Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championship title in as many years this afternoon on the Cooper River in Collingswood, N.J.
The Minutewomen won five of eight races in posting 44 total points. Rhode Island enjoyed its best-ever finish at the Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship by placing second with 34 points. George Washington, which had finished second each of the last six years, was third with 23 points. Dayton was fourth with 22 points, followed by Fordham (16 points), Saint Joseph's (15 points), La Salle (12 points), Duquesne (eight points), and Temple (seven points).
Massachusetts' five wins are the most by an Atlantic 10 team since the Minutewomen posted six wins in 1999. UMass' Sarah Pollman (Hamm, Germany), Lea Jakobsen (Copenhagen, Denmark), Katia Prokopenko (Pskov, Russia) and Anna Talucci (West Chester, Pa.) took gold in the Quad (7:43.50), while the Novice 4 boat of Bethanny Peters (Huntsville, Ala.), Christen Dexter (Centerville, Mass.) Lizzy Boyle (Darien, Conn.), Becca Bell (Greenfield, Mass.) and Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.) won in 8:27.43.
The Minutewomen's Varsity 8 boat of coxswain Megan Mastropolo (Old Tappan, N.J.), Jakobsen, Pollmann, Prokopenko, Colleen Banfield (Billerica, Mass.), Hayley McGrath (Florence, Mass.), Talucci, Erin Cooke (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and Lauren Cromwell (Missoula, Mont.) took first in a season-best time of 6:48.66.
Coach Jim Dietz' second Varsity 8 boat of Alpana Sharma (Frisco, Colo.), Mila Gorzkowski (Matawan, N.J.), Rachel Fischer (Washington, Mo.), Katie O'Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Kate Bonner (Nashua, N.H.), Liz Robb (Falmouth, Mass.), Ann Roberts (Jamaica Plain, Mass.), Laura Hutchinson (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Lindsay Hayward (Wynnewood, Pa.) cruised to victory in 7:11.15.
The UMass Novice 8-A boat of Carrie Champigny (Danvers, Mass.), Liz Eleftherakis (Barnstable, Mass.), Brycie Philbin (Kenwood, Calif.), Faith Harkins (Marion, Mass.), Carrie Hellstedt (Westford, Mass.), Lesley Day (Needham, Mass.), Naomi Rudov (Framingham, Mass.), Stacey Schaedler (Yantic, Conn.) and Jen Tomich (Ashley Falls, Mass.) won in 7:23.70, while the Novice 8-B boat was runner-up to George Washington in 8:15.15.
Next weekend, UMass heads to Syracuse, N.Y., for a meet against Syracuse and Villanova, Saturday, May 4.
