Crew Races on Charles River

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts women's crew team's varsity 8 boat finished fourth in a five-way meet held today on Boston's Charles River. Northeastern dominated the meet, winning five of six races on the day.

The Minutewomen's varsity 8 team of coxswain Megan Mastropolo (Old Tappan, N.J.), Lea Jakobsen (Copenhagen, Denmark), Sarah Pollmann (Hamm, Germany), Colleen Banfield (Billerica, Mass.), Hayley McGrath (Florence, Mass.), Anna Talucci (West Chester, Pa.), Erin Cooke (Sinking Spring, Pa.), Katia Prokopenko (Pskov, Russia) and Lauren Cromwell (Missoula, Mont.) finished fourth in 6:52.8, behind 16th-ranked Northeastern (6:42.4), No. 21 Columbia (6:43.2) and Navy (6:46.7), but ahead of Kansas State (6:53.1).

UMass' second varsity 8 boat finished fourth in its race with a time of 7:04.2, while the Massachusetts novice 8 was third in 7:38.8 and the second novice 8 was third in 7:53.4. In the varsity four+, the UMass varsity lightweights were third in 8:40.5.

Next up for UMass is the 2002 A-10 Championship in Camden, N.J., Saturday, April 27. The Minutewomen are six-time defending conference champions.
