Men's Gymnastics Places Second At ECAC Championship

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior Darren Morace (Westfield, Mass.) placed second in the all-around with a score of 52.800, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts men's gymnastics team finished second at the 2002 Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship. UMass finished with a team total of 208.200, just behind Temple, with a total of 210.500. William & Mary finished in third (206.700), followed by Navy (204.050), Illinois-Chicago (202.950), Army (200.650), Springfield College (198.600), James Madison (192.675), Southern Connecticut (190.600), Vermont (163.150) and M.I.T. (150.250).

Junior Justin Hammar (Woodbury, Minn.) and junior Ben Jacobs (Milwaukee, Wis.) both had first place event finishes for the Minutemen on the day. Hammar placed first on pommel horse with a 9.450, while Jacobs had the top score of the day on high bar with a 9.100. Sophomore Patrick McFarlin (Longmeadow, Mass.) also had a strong day, placing fifth in the all-around with a total of 51.350.

The 2002 ECAC Championship concludes on Sunday, Mar. 24, with the individual event finals at 3:00 p.m. In addition to Morace (floor exercise, high bar and vault), Hammar (pommel horse), Jacobs (high bar) and McFarlin (pommel horse and parallel bars), other Minutemen who will compete on Sunday include senior Clayton Kent (Exeter, N.H.) on floor exercise, sophomore Andy Sobuta (Maynard, Mass.) on still rings and senior Orrin Donley (Venice, Fla.) on high bar.
