Amherst, Mass. -- Getting in the water for the first time this spring, the UMass women's crew team captured a pair of victories in a triangular meet with host-Fairfield and Delaware on the Housatonic River in Shelton, Conn.

The UMass varsity 8 boat cruised to victory in 7:07.8, just ahead of Delaware (7:11.7) and Fairfield (7:32.0). The Minutewomen's novice 4+ boat also took first with a time of 8:44.3, while Fairfield was second in 8:54.0.

In the second varsity 8 race, Massachusetts finished second (7:28.8) to Delaware's A boat (7:25.6), while UMass' 9:27.5 clocking in the varsity 4 was good for second place behind Delaware's A boat (9:17.0).

In the novice 8, Delaware took top honors with a time of 7:48.2, while the UMass A boat, which led for most of the race until being passed in the last 800 meters, was next (7:55.4), and its B team finished third in 8:26.1.

The competition marked the earliest opener ever for the UMass women's crew team, which has captured six consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference titles.

The Minutewomen return to action on April 6-7 at the San Diego (Calif.) Crew Classic.
