AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's gymnastics team won four of six events here on Sunday afternoon to defeat Temple 208.800-207.750. Both teams posted season-high totals, while UMass eclipsed its previous season bests on pommel horse, still rings, vault and horizontal bars.
UMass was once again led by junior all-arounder Darren Morace (Westfield, Mass.), who captured his fourth all-around title in five meets. Morace posted a meet high 9.350 on vault to take the title. He also finished second on parallel bars and third on pommel horse, tying a career high on horse with a 8.950.
Sophomore Patrick McFarlin (Longmeadow, Mass.) won two event titles, claiming top score on floor exercise and pommel horse. McFarlin tied his career high on floor exercise while posting his second-highest score on pommel horse. He was the only gymnast to claim titles in two events.
Junior Ben Jacobs (Milwaukee, Wis.) placed first on the horizontal bar and second on parallel bars. His 9.000 on the horizontal bar was a season high for any Minuteman, while his 8.450 on parallel bars marked a personal best this season.
The University of Massachusetts men's gymnastics team has now won its last five meets in the friendly confines of Boyden Gymnasium, after posting a 3-0 record at home last season. Dating back to the beginning of the 1999-2000 season, the Minutemen have recorded a 8-1 home mark.
The Minutemen will take a week off of dual meet action, as they travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to take part in the Winter Nationals on Friday and Saturday next weekend. UMass will return to Boyden Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 16, as they host Air Force in a dual meet.
