UMass Swim Teams Win Five Events On Day Two

The UMass men's and women's swim teams won five events during the second day of the three-day meet at the Nutmeg Invitational on Saturday. The women's team tallied victories in the 200-yard medley relay while the men's team finished first in the 400-yard individual medley, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 800-yard freestyle relay. The meet, which has no team scoring, will conclude on Sunday at Yale University.
The Minutewomen's first place 200-yard medley relay team, made up of junior Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.), junior Christen Dexter (Centerville, Mass.), junior Diana Alberti (Wantagh, N.Y.) and senior Lizzy Boyle (Darien, Conn.), finished the event in 1:50.02. Rowell also finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (59.91) on Saturday, while Alberti placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (58.84).
Boyle was also a member of the second-place 800-yard freestyle relay team. Joined by junior Shauna Nielsen (Huntington Beach, Calif.), senior Catherine Getty (Wayne, N.J.) and freshman Aimee Bourassa (Ottawa, Ontario), the team finished the event in 7:54.30. Bourassa also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.95), and sophomore Colleen Wasson (Harleysville, Pa.) finished third in the 100-yard backstroke (59.91).
The Minutemen were led by four first place finishes on Saturday. Senior Ryan Zaucha (Auburn, Calif.) won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:05.42. His teammates finished close behind with a second place finish from senior Tommy Keane (Melrose, Mass.) at 4:09.30, and a third place finish from sophomore Jad Vonderheid (Annapolis, Md.) at 4:13.30. Zaucha also placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke at 59.43.
Senior Rob Bellamy (Columbia, Md.) won his second event of the weekend when he finished first in the 200-yard freestyle. Bellamy was also a part of the first-place 800-yard freestyle relay team. Joined by sophomore Dylan Smith (Timmonium, Md.), Keane and sophomore Owen Scollan (Lowell, Mass.), the team finished the event in 6:53.33.
Other top performers for the Minutemen were senior Justin Houck (Wyomissing, Pa.), who placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, senior Chad Arnold (Mohnton, Pa.), who finished third in the 100-yard butterfly (51.69), and junior Sean Collins (North Reading, Mass.), who placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:00.16.
UMass got off to a quick start during Sunday's preliminary rounds as well. Arnold placed second in the 100-yard freestyle at 47.37, and for the women's team, Dexter placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.83) while senior Lauren Bulkeley (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished right behind her in second place at 2:27.14. The finals of these events will take place Sunday evening.
