Bellamy and Butler Named co-Athletes of the Week

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts women's basketball senior Jen Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior men's swimmer Rob Bellamy (Columbia, Md.) were selected as the co-Dinn Brothers/UMass Athletes of the Week as announced at the weekly sports luncheon earlier today.
Bellamy led the Minutemen with three first-place finishes at the Nutmeg Invitational, Dec. 6-8, at Yale University. The senior won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41.16 and placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:37.22. Both times were the fastest recorded on the UMass squad so far this season. Bellamy was also a member of the first-place 800-yard freestyle relay team. Teamed with Dylan Smith (Timmonium, Md.), Tommy Keane (Melrose, Mass.) and Owen Scollan (Lowell, Mass.), the quartet recorded a time of 4:13.30 to claim the victory.
Butler averaged 15.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in two Minutewoman wins last week. In addition, she went a perfect 14-for-14 from the free throw line. In a 53-48 win over Vermont at the Mullins Center last Wednesday, the preseason A-10 All-Conference first team member scored 11 points and added a game-high 11 rebounds. She also had four steals, a block and an assist. Then, in the 70-50 win at New Hampshire on Saturday, the senior poured in a game-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, four steals and two assists.
The men's swim team (2-1) will be off until Jan. 4, when it competes in the Sacred Heart Invitational, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, the women's basketball squad (6-1) hosts undefeated Villanova (6-0) tonight at the Curry Hicks Cage. The Rage In The Cage is slated to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
