AMHERST, Mass. - Senior punter David Sanger (Cocoa Beach, Fla.), a member of the University of Massachusetts football team, has been selected as the Dinn Brothers UMass Athlete of the Week by the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee, for the week ending Nov. 3.
In last Saturday's 17-7 victory over Delaware, Sanger punted eight times for 340 yards, good for an average of 42.5 yards per kick. He also placed five of his eight punts inside the Blue Hens' 20-yard line, with four of them being downed inside the Delaware 10-yard line. Thanks in part to Sanger's efforts, the Blue Hen's average drive started at their own 19-yard line, while UMass started its average drive at its own 32-yard line.
Through nine games this season, Sanger has averaged 41.0 yards on 47 punts, with 21 kicks inside the 20-yard line and a long punt of 68 yards. Over the course of his UMass career, Sanger has now punted 215 times for 8,749 yards, and his average of 40.7 yards per punt ranks as the best in school history. Seventy-four of his 215 career punts have pinned opponents inside the 20.
UMass (7-2 overall, 5-1 Atlantic 10), now ranked 12th in the nation, returns to action on Saturday, November 9, when it travels to New Hampshire (2-6 overall, 1-5 Atlantic 10) for a 12:00 p.m. game.
