AMHERST, Mass. - Junior gymnast Darren Morace (Westfield, Mass.) and senior Kitwana Rhymer (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) of the men's basketball team were named the WHMP/UMass co-Athletes of the Week, the Sports Luncheon Committee announced today. This is the second time this year that Morace has earned the honor, while Rhymer has earned the accolade four times in his career.
Morace captured his third all-around title in four events this season. He captured meet titles in four of six events (floor exercise, pommel horse, horizontal bars and vault) to lead the Minutemen to a seven-point victory over Navy on Saturday evening. His 8.95 on pommel horse was a new career high, and was six-tenths better than any other competitor at the meet.
Rhymer scored 14 points and pulled down four rebounds in the 73-60 win over George Washington last Wednesday. In Saturday's 67-65 win over St. Bonaventure, Rhymer scored 23 points and had seven boards. His 23 points was the second highest scoring total of the season for UMass.
The men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, as it travels to Kingston, R.I., to take on Rhode Island at 2 p.m. The men's gymnastics team will host Temple at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Boyden Gymnasium.
