UMass Men's Track places fourth at 2002 Challenge cup

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's indoor track team garnered 58 points this past weekend and finished fourth at the 2002 Challenge Cup, held at the Boston University Armory. Leading the way for the Minutemen was junior Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng (Accra, Ghana) who won the 55M dash with a time of 6.37 seconds.
Also contributing were senior tri-captain Mike Howell (Haverhill, Mass.) who had a season best in the 100M dash, while freshman Carlos Benitez (Waterbury, Conn.) turned in a season-best in the 200M dash at 23.35.
Sophomore Dave Mullert (Rehoboth, Mass.) turned in a season-best 1:57.23 in 800M along with freshman Matt Clark (Worcester, Mass.) who was right behind him at 1:57.82.
Senior Kevin Curtin (Chelmsford, Mass.) set a new season-best in the mile at 4:20.12 (sixth overall), and overall the Minutemen set three of the top six season-best mile times of the indoor season. Senior tri-captain Sal Nastasi (Merrich, N.Y.) turned in a personal season-best at 4:25.07, and sophomore John Jacobson (Taunton, Mass.) checked in at 4:26.63.
Senior Mike Pieck (Guilderland, N.Y.) turned in season-best 8:53.26 in the 3000M run and freshman Mike Shaw (Reading, Mass.) set a new personal season-best with a 12'5.00 clearance in the pole vault shattering his previous season-best of 11'11.75. Sophomore Jeff Jason (New Bedford, Mass.) also set a new season-best in 35-pound weight throw at 47'08.50, good enough for third overall behind teammate junior Eric Uliano (Haverill, Mass.) who came in at 48'07.25. As a team UMass finished third in the 4x800M relay at 8:07.16.
Other teams competing included Connecticut (216 points), Rhode Island (118), Brown (113) and Providence College (48).
The Minutemen return to action this coming weekend January 26 at Durham, N.H.
