WEST POINT, N.Y. - Sophomore Pat McFarlin (Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded a career-high 9.350 on the pommel horse to claim the individual title at the 2002 West Point Open last weekend. McFarlin, last year's ECAC champion on pommel horse, also claimed a share of the floor exercise title as he scored a 9.000 to tie Army's John Robella.
The University of Massachusetts men's gymnastics team finished in second place at the 2002 West Point Open, totaling a score of 204.000. Penn State captured the team title with a 209.500, while Army, Temple and Navy rounded out the top five.
McFarlin was one of six Minutemen to advance to the individual finals. Junior Darren Morace (Westfield, Mass.) was the only other UMass gymnast to qualify for more than one event, as he finished in the top 10 on floor exercise, still rings and pommel horse, and placed second on the vault.
The Minutemen will return to action on Saturday, as they travel to University Park, Pa., to take on sixth-ranked Penn State. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
