Men's Gymnastics Places Second At West Point Open

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's gymnastics team finished in second place at the 2002 West Point Open, totaling a score of 204.000. Penn State captured the team title with a 209.500, while Army, Temple and Navy rounded out the top five.
The Minutemen were led by senior Clayton Kent (Exeter, N.H.), junior Darren Morace (Westfield, Mass.) and sophomore Pat McFarlin (Longmeadow, Mass.). Kent led a UMass sweep on floor, as he claimed the title with a 9.150, and McFarlin claimed second with a 9.000. McFarlin captured the pommel horse competition with a 9.200, while Morace claimed the vault title with a 9.450. Morace also finished second in the all-around competition, as he was the only Minuteman to compete in all six events.
UMass captured the team titles on floor exercise, pommel horse and vault, while placing fourth on rings and parallel bars and fifth on horizontal bars.
The top eight performers in each event advanced to tonight's finals.
